Emotions of Easter: the sadness of Saturday

Saturday.  The day after Jesus died.

Have you ever felt disappointed?

The disciples and other followers of Jesus did on Saturday.  

The don't know what to think.  

The body of the one they had put their hope in was laying in a grave.

They were not thinking resurrection.  

They were not filled with hope. 

In reading resurrection accounts you can see that.

The ladies went to the tomb  prepared to take care of a dead body.

The men on the road to Emmaus were not filled with hope.

It's Saturday but Sunday is coming.

The Emotions of Easter - The Anger and Disgust of Good Friday.

Today's emotions are the anger and disgust of Good Friday.  

Read an account of the crucifixion with your family and ask these two questions.

What makes you angry in the story?

What disgusts you in this story?  A definition of disgust is a feeling of deep disapproval aroused by something unpleasant or offensive.

After some discussion remind them that their sin, your sin, our sin is why Jesus had to die,  which is why Christians are to hate sin? 

The video and questions below will help you talk with your child about the crucifixion.

• What are the consequences of our sin?
• Does God want a relationship with us?
• What did God do about our sin?
• How can you have your sins forgiven?

Schedule for this Sunday's Egg Hunt...

This will happen in the 400 Wing from pre-k through 5th grade. 2's & 3's will be done in their classrooms during both 9:00 & 10:30 hrs.

9:00 Service 

• Pre-K & Kindergarten will go at 9:30 

• 1st- 5th grade- 9:45

10:30 Service

• 1st -3rd grade will go to 400 wing as soon as they leave from Praise and Worship from main Service. 

• Pre-K & Kindergarten ; you will go around 11:45 depending on when the first group is done.

There will be reminder sheet posted in each room so everyone can review.

The Emotions of Easter - The Fear of the Pharisees.

Today's reading is about The Fear of Judas.

The Pharisees loved money (Luke 16:14), feared men (Matthew 26:5), and hated Jesus (Matthew 26:4).  

That formula may be lived out before you more than you realize.  The love of money often looks merely practical. The fear of men can hide behind masks.

But the Bible is clear: If you love money and fear men, you cannot love God or escape hell (Luke 16:13; John 5:44) — and you become a card-carrying member of the crowd who crucified the Author of life (Acts 3:15).  

The cross — that horrifying drama of hatred — was only a symptom of the Pharisees’ craving for money, approval, and power. It was as if they bought a billboard to advertise their love for money, and set on a hill for all to see.But they would never do something so obvious. What would the people say? They “feared the people” (Luke 22:2).  

In fact, the people’s love for Jesus was half the reason the religious leaders hated him so much. The authorities were cowards with cravings. They had to find a way to kill him quietly (Matthew 26:3–5). They had to find a way to murder an innocent man without losing any esteem or influence.

The Pharisees "feared the people" and they feared Jesus, which is why they paid Judas to betray Jesus.

The Emotions of Easter - Joy of Palm Sunday!

Each day from Wednesday through Sunday, we are going to post some daily readings for you and your family with the theme of "The Emotions of Easter!"

The reading is the Joy of Palm Sunday.

On Palm Sunday, Jesus entrance into the city is filled with joy!  Branch waving, coat dropping joy!







INTRODUCTION QUESTIONS:

What is joy?

Christian joy is a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the Word and in the world.

Now understand, describing joy as a good feeling is not a bad thing.  You don't necessarily have control over your feelings.  When you think about what God has done for you through Jesus Christ it should make you joyful.

What brings you joy?


What do you do when you are joyful?

Here are some quotes regarding the Joy of Palm Sunday from an article entitled "The Strange and Wonderful Ride."  Click HERE for the entire article.

Joy shines on Palm Sunday — a joy, as we now know, that anticipates a supernova of gladness coming on the following Sunday. In the thrill of hope, the crowds rehearse the praises of Psalm 118, pining that perhaps this is, at long last, the great “Son of David,” the promised royal rescuer, riding into the Holy City to definitively save his people. 

“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:9). Hosanna — a Hebrew declaration of adoration and delight — is the refrain for this triumphal entry.

The joy of Palm Sunday is a shadow of the joy to come.

Yet the joy of Palm Sunday forecasts the unrivaled euphoria to come on Easter morning.

In Jesus our joy comes from the most unlikely place.

The long-awaited Messiah comes not in human glory, but peculiar glory — the glory of strength in weakness, the glory of indomitable joy in excruciating pain, the glory of the Lion of Judah who gives himself as the Lamb of God. He comes on a donkey’s colt to be the stone the builders will utterly reject on Friday, and that God himself will unveil as the very cornerstone on Sunday morning.

Kids are still in Church BUT there is no meal!

Quick Update:

Kids in Church:
1st grade and up are still in church this Sunday.  Check back tomorrow and Saturday for Kids in Church help.

Family Meal Time:
There is no March Meal time this Sunday.
Remember to check out this site and the Kids Take Home pages for information about the next time.

Kids in Church and Family Together for a Meal

After the Sunday service on March 20th, we will be having our next Family Lunch time.
Families with children 5th grade and under are invited to a pizza lunch.  There are spots for 15 families.
If you want to be part of this fellowship time please email children@emmanuelbaptist.com) or leave a comment here WITH your name and number of people BY THURSDAY, MARCH 17th.


If you attended the first or second meal, here are a couple of things you can do.

1. Please allow other families the opportunity to be part of this time.
2. Encourage other families to sign up.

Those planning to attend, here are a couple of specific things that will happen during this meal time.

1. You will sit with your child/children for a lunch.  Menu to be determined by the end of this week.  If you and/or your child is a picky eater, please bring your own sandwiches or other lunch items. 
2. During the meal time we will have some meal time activities for you to do around the table.  Some of these will be fun activities.  Others will be helps to talk about the sermon and/or the lesson. 
3. Pastor Dave will take about 10 minutes at the end of the meal to talk one of the parents about leading your family meal times and worship times.  For single parents, someone will help out with your child/children during this time.  
4. IF you and your family want to stick around afterwards to play one of your favorite games or invite another family to play a game with your family, plan to stick around afterwards.  You don't need to feel obligated to stay for this part of the day.

Couple of details to remember:

• There is a reason we are doing a simple lunch.  Plan to hear about why at the lunch and on the blog later!
• We have a limited number of high chairs at the church.  Please plan accordingly.
• You may be contacted to bring a side dish or dessert.
• If you have any family meal time ideas that have been helpful in the past, please send them to me before Sunday.  I would love to share them with other families.
• We may schedule more of these in the future.  

Sunday, March 20th is also a Kids in Church Sunday (1st - 3rd graders are with their parents).

Come Celebrate UPWARD!!!

Here is a hopefully helpful email about tomorrow’s Celebration 

@ Emmanuel Baptist Church,

We want to use this evening to 

connect with UPWARD 2016 families and friends one more time

thank the many volunteers, families and players

remember some of the Bible lessons learned throughout the season

We have purposefully planned the evening to be packed with some games, prizes for every player in attendance, thank you's, a challenge from God's word and time with your team.

So plan to be on time.  The program starts at 6:30 and will be done at 7:45.

BUT PLAYERS NEED TO ARRIVE BETWEEN 6:17 and 6:27 and go to the chapel.

Parents, head into the auditorium for the 6:30 start up!

Everyone, enjoy the program!

All the teams will have time together from 7:35 until about 7:45.

We will have snacks in the fellowship hall starting at 7:45.

Enjoy the time with other UPWARD families and volunteers!

The Emotions of Easter!!

We often tell people not to live by their emotions and that is very true.
At the same time, our emotions are important.
This month as we study four different parts of the Easter story, we are going to use the Bible, the blog and emotions to help the kids and families gain a greater understanding and appreciation for what Jesus did for God's glory and for us on the cross

For the entire month of March we are going to focus on different parts of the Easter story.

• The joy and excitement of the Triumphal Entry!
• The rejection of Judas' betrayal!
• The pain, suffering & sadness of the crucifixion!  At the same time today, we know there an amazing anticipation of what God is going to do!
• The power, overwhelming joy and gratitude of the Resurection!!!! 

March 6

Title:   Jesus enters Jerusalem

Lesson:  Book 3 - Res1: 01
Passage:  Matthew 21-23; Zecheriah 9:9

Principle:  Jesus is the promised Messiah

Memory verse:
