Serving in children's ministry

First and foremost we want every parent to be involved in their child's life.

Second, we have opportunities to serve various times throughout the week and especially on Sunday.

Sunday mornings:
  • Check-in (all ages)
  • Teaching (all ages)
  • Assisting (all ages)
  • Small group leaders (1st through 5th grade)
  • Worshipping (1st through 5th grade)

Changed into His Image and parenting

This past Sunday we talked about the bible study resources we want to encourage people to go through.

One of those resources is Changed into His Image by Jim Berg.

Throughout the book Berg looks at several common relationships in life that involve Biblical change.  Over the next several weeks I would like to highlight some the things he says about parenting.

Chapter One...
Parenting when understood biblically, is basically a discipling relationship.  When God gives a child to a Christian couple, they must realize that their bundle of joy is essentially a pagan.  Their biblical mission is to evanglize him then to equip him for usefulness to Christ, which, in essence is discipleship.  p. 12

Incidentally many parenting failures reflect a lack of biblical discipleship between husband and wife and a failure to understand principles of biblical change and growth within the marriage itself.   Husbands and wives who are not actively helping each other grow in likeness of Christ within their marriage will not see the importance of it with their children either.  Neither will they know how to apply the issues to the lives of their children since they have not had the practice of doing so in their own lives.

God is the Boss!! We are Not!!

Sometimes I post activities or ideas for teachers.
I don't do this as much as I should.

This is what I shared with them!

Some review questions for the quarter:
  What did God provide?
  How did the people complain?
How did God show His love?

God is the boss.
He is the one who has told His people what to do.
He is the one who has provided His people what they needed.

The people complained.
The people complained about the food God provided.
The people complained about God's plan.
The people complained about God's leaders.

God showed mercy to His people because of who He is.

We have a tendency to complain.
This is a problem.
This is sin.

There is an answer.
This answer is not "Be Happy"
The answer to our sin problem is trusting in God and His Plan
The answer is Jesus.

Consider this quote from Christ-Centered Preaching
"The problem (with moralistic teaching) lies in the fact that such teaching becomes a menace to faith because it makes the ministry of Christ irrelevant by seeming to make God's love dependent on our works."

Kids are in church this Sunday (1st through 5th grade)

The sermon title is "When a Pharisee Makes Sense"  from Acts 5:12 - 42.

Here is the children's sermon notes page from
www.emmanuelbaptist.com/images/File/children/childrens_sermon_notes_08_23.pdf

Here are some teaching points:

  1. For unbelievers the gospel exposes pride and self-righteousness.
  2. For believers, this a plead to keep believing and let this faith God has given you grow.  Let it prove authentic.
Also, Two kids are being baptized in the service.
Baptism provide great opportunities to talk with children about salvation.

Family Prayer Time Prompts

On Wednesday nights we have been having family prayer time activities.
This past Sunday, I sent each of the families out to do this prayer walk activity in their own neighborhoods or around the church.

The week before we had family prayer times at different places around the church.
- In the auditorium at seat 2K13 families prayed for the pastors especially Pastor Duke as he preaches and Pastor Andy and Pastor Dan as they get adjusted.
- In the foyer families prayed for friends and family that attend EBC
- At the flag pole outside families prayed for visitors that would come to our church.
- On the back porch of the missionary house families prayed for missionaries.
- At the food pantry families prayed for those who come to and serve at the Groceries for Life ministry.

Throughout the summer we prayed as families and a group using different prayer prompts to help kids focus on specific requests.

Our Curriculum: What makes Generations of Grace unique?

"Generations of Grace has God as its focus from beginning to end.  Throughout each lesson, students learn about God’s character and see His work in the lives of men and women of Scripture.  The principles learned are then applied to the children’s lives.  We want our children to know God, love Him, and serve Him with their lives."
from the www.generationsofgrace.com

Here is the bottom line.  We want our Bible teaching to begin with God.
We want to teach children BIG truths they grow into!!

If you have any questions about our children's disciplemaking plan, please email children@emmanuelbaptist.com

We will briefly discuss the points in this article.

Is your child a Christian?

Admitting the obvious—that we are not God and cannot see the heart—I maintain certain evidence can help us discern the legitimacy of child or teenager's profession of faith.  (Read the rest of the article)
