Fighter Verses: Reasons & Resources

We are going to be using the Foundation Fighter Verses for the 1st through 5th graders.
If you check on the website, you will see these verses are designed for younger kids.
  Why are we using these verses?
These verses may be familiar to your children.
  Why are we using these verses?

We are using these verses to help promote scripture memory with children and families.  Our long range goal is to begin a church wide scripture memory program.

Please take time to help your children learn these foundational verses.  You should also take time to memorize them yourself.

Here are some scripture memory resources on the Fighter Verses website...

Preparing for this Sunday

If you want to talk with your 1st through 5th grade children about some things before Sunday's message here is some of the sermon notes with talking points.
www.emmanuelbaptist.com/images/File/children/rom8parent.pdf

The sermon notes are on the right side of this blog or you can pick up a sheet on Sunday at the welcome center.

Here are some of these questions:
  • READ THESE VERSES WITH YOUR CHILDREN.
  • WHAT IS MURPHY’S LAW?
  • TALK ABOUT TIMES WHEN SIN LEADS TO SUFFERING.
  • TALK ABOUT TIMES WHEN SUFFERING LEADS TO SIN
  • REMIND YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILDREN, NOT ALL SIN LEADS TO SUFFERING IN THIS WORLD & NOT ALL SUFFERING LEADS TO SIN.
  • TALK ABOUT THE CHANGING SEASONS.  WHAT IS REVEALED ABOUT LIFE IN THE SEASONS?
Read through the sermon notes to get some context.

At last week's Impact Service, Pastor Duke announced we will be going to one service starting December 1st.  That means there will be some changes to the service schedule.  I would like for each family to commit to pray for EBC's family ministry leadership as we think through how to best minister to the families that come to EBC.
Please email children@emmanuelbaptist.com if you would take time at least once a week to pray for EBC's family minsitry.

A Crucified & Risen Son leads to a Dead Yet Alive father from Changed Into His Image

While Berg writes this quote specifically to fathers.  Each of every family member needs to reminder of the need to die to one's self.

"If you want to see your family turn around, you will have to be the first one to die.  In God's pattern of leadership, you, like Christ, have to be the first one on the cross.  From there you can call your family to follow you by dying as well.  You must lead in following the Father's will of humbling yourself for others."  (Changed Into His Image, p. 61)

I have had times when I have fallen so short as a dad.
What I have realized is that often these are times when things have not worked the way I wanted them to work.
I am frustrated with my kids for not living up to what I want.
I am frustrated with my wife.  I am frustrated with myself.

At the heart of it all though, I am frustrated with God.
I don't know about you but when I am frustrated with God,
I tend to make excuses for my sinful, lazy, "I deserve a break today," "life is all about me" attitude and behavior.

Hilarious Example of Family Worship (with photo evidence)

This is from a blog I recently read.

Come...Follow A Failure

Can you get a fat lip in a faith talk?
Come follow us for a look at a typical Lynch Family Faith Talk! Many times we move through five stages of progression:
1) Beginning;
2) We’ve Gone Slightly Off Track;
3) Heated Escalation;
4) what I like to call “Faith Talk Failure!”;
5) and finally to Repentance--by the somewhat frustrated though well-intentioned parents.

Take a peek at us around the table.

{ Beginning }
Dad (me): “So boys...why did these people pray to and worship false idols instead of God?”
Jackson: “God.”
Owen: “No...not God. That’s not the right answer Jackson!”
Sankie: “Because...cause...cause...uhhh...cause we’re supposed to love God most.”
Dad: “Right Sank. God is the only true God who is worthy of our love and devotion. Other things distract our hearts and begin to capture our love and affections in ways that were only meant to be towards God.”
Jackson: “God.” (head drops below the table as he falls off his chair)
Dad: “Jackson, get back up in your chair and listen. Stop dropping off your chair.”
Dad: “What are some things that attract our eyes and cause us to desire them?”
Owen: “Umm...Umm...the other day on Wild Kratts there was a bug that ate another bug and...”
Sankie: “No. That’s not what we’re talking about! That’s not an idol...and it wasn’t even a bug. It was a...”
Owen: “Yes it was! It was a beetle bug and it had a hard shell and...”
Jackson: “Bug? Bug?........Bug bug bug bug. I like bugs...buuuuuugs.” (drops off chair again--hits chin and bites tongue--starts crying--Owen acts out same action to show us what Jack did when he hurt himself--Sankie and Owen start mock crying--cue even-more-frustrated Jack)

{ We’ve Gone Slightly Off Track }
Dad: “Ok...ok...let’s think back to our question! What are some things that attract us that may become idols in our hearts if left unchecked?”
Sankie: “Video games...movies...”
Owen: “Yeah, yeah...tv and candy. I love candy. Mom, can I have a Reese’s?”
Mom: “No. Owen pay attention.”
Jack: “Me too...I want a Reese’s.”
Dad: “No. Nobody’s getting a Reese’s.” (cue crying by Jack)

God Reveals His Might at the Jordan River

A great activity connected with this lesson is to "build" something to remember God's provisions in your life.
Just as the Israelites used the stones as a memorial, you as a family should take time to "build" memories.
Joshua 4:21-23
And he said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.
What have you established in your family that will prompt your children to "What are those?" and provide you with the opportunity to talk to them about God's goodness.
