God calls Israel to love through obedience

Passage:  Deuteronomy 6:4–9

Principle:  God calls us to meditate on and obey His Word.

Praise:  “I Love You, Lord”

Prompt:
Ask your child these questions:
  • How was Israel to love God?
  • What were parents to teach their children?
  • How can we apply God’s Word to our lives?
  • Should anything be more important to us than God?
Practice:
Help your child apply these truths in the following ways
  • By memorizing Scripture to mediate on throughout the day.
  • By applying the truth of God’s Word to his life today.

Changed Into His Image: Recognizing the evil within

"In most cases 'issues' reveal what is going on in the child's heart.  That is good news for a parent who understands God's view of the heart, because he can then begin to address the problem God's way.   Incidentally, a parent who does not understand the nature of the human heart will not be aware of how his own heart's corruption is a further stumbling block to the heart of his child.  A parent's own inconsistency, anger, moodiness, materialism, sensuality, or deception can be a far more serious stumbling block to the child's life than whatever probelm (e.g., peer pressure and immaturity) the parent is trying to address."

Hear O Israel & Parents today you better listen also!!!!

This upcoming Sunday we are going to be studying Deuteronomy 6 in our children's ministry.
This is a very challenging passsage of scripture for parents.

From Shift:  What It Takes to Finally Reach Families Today

Parents are to impress the commands of God on their children in everyday life as they walk along the road, as they sit at home, when they lie down, and when they get up.  This is a lost art among Christians in our culture for various reasons:
  1. Families are busy.
  2. Parents think discipling their children is a professional's job.
  3. Parents aren't sure how to be primary faith influencers.
Over the next three days I am going to post some thought regarding each of these and what we, as a church are doing to overcome these problems.

HERE IS WHAT WAS SHARED WITH THE TEACHERS THIS WEEK ON THEIR RESOURCE PAGE:

Deuteronomy 6

This passage of scripture is called the Shema - the Hebrew word for Hear is Shema
It is referred to in almost every Christian parenting book.

"Hear, O Israel:  The Lord our God, the Lord is one..."  Deut. 6:4

One writer wrote the following about Deut 6:7:
They [children] are also to be included as the family studies God's word as it relates to current things that are discussed during breakfast, as the morning paper is being read, or on a walk as the day's events are thought of in the city streets, or in the fields.
Activities and reminders for families to remember to rehearse God's word would be helpful.

Acting out verse 7 could be very helpful
Practice the memory verse while sitting
Practice the memory verse while walking in place
Practice the memory verse while lying down

Here is a really important lesson to remember.  This is what we have been trying to help the kids see from the beginning of this curriculum.

Hear O Israel, the Lord Our God, the Lord is One.
"The Shema begins with a reference point.  An undeniable, non-negotiable understanding that there is one God and He alone is God.  This is the beginning of spiritual formation.  It's the first step of faith.  It is the most foundational truth to pass on to the next generation."   from Shift:  What It Takes to Finally Reach Families Today.

God Requires Obedience

Passage:  Deuteronomy 4

Principle:  God requires obedience from His people.

Ask your child these questions

  • What did Moses command the people of Israel?
  • How is God glorified through obedience?
  • How was Israel different from other nations?
  • What would other nations think when they saw Israel obeying

Practice:
Help your child apply these truths in the following ways:

  • By obeying God’s commands to bring Him glory.
  • By demonstrating God’s uniqueness in how he treats others.
