Kids in Church! - Questions are for more than gathering information!

Pastor Duke will be preaching from Romans 8:31-34 this Sunday, which is a Kids in Church Sunday!

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?  Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.  Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

1. Be prepared for worship.
2. Be a role model for your children.
3. Walk your child through the service before it starts.
4. Pray for your child.
5. Encourage your child to participate in the service.
6. Help your child become an active sermon listener.
7. Stretch your child's ability to sit still and be attentive.
8. Talk about the service on the way home.

Here are a couple of helps specific to Romans 8:31 - 39.

First, talk about the questions we ask.

• Questions are usually asked to get information.  You can play 20 questions with your family.
• Sometimes questions are asked to make a point.  An example of this when someone asks questions like "Are you really going to wear that outside this house?"  The person asking doesn't want to know your answer.  They are trying to tell you "Please, don't wear that outfit today."  The question in Romans 8:31 "If God is for us, who can be against us?" is asked to remind us that no one can successfully be against those who trust in the Lord.  Who can make an accusation stick?  Because as we learned earlier, God is working all things for his glory and our good.

Greetings to all,

I hope that your summer has been a pleasant one with family and friends. 

I want to take some time and exhort all who play a huge part in serving on Sunday’s, Special Child Care events, Impact Services, those of you who step up and serve in times where there are last minute changes.

Pastor Dave and I can’t thank you enough for your servant’s spirit and using your gifts & talents that God has given you to use for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God.

In my devotions from the The Gospel Primer for Christians, today it reminded me of why we serve. “ Saved for Good Works “ When God “works “ in me day by day, He does so in order to produce in me the desire and the power to “ work  for His good pleasure. “  

Philippians 2: 12-13 says "So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed….. work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

Ephesians 2:10 says "For we are His Workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

This fall, we are entering into year 2 for the second time around with our Children Desiring God curriculum, which goes through the Bible in three years.

It is a privilege to see the changes in the hearts of not only our children but you who faithfully present the Word of God on the level in which our children are hearing it and seeds of truth are being planted in the hearts on a weekly basis.  As well as parents committing to the spiritual upbringing of their children.

Yet we know we are only instruments, servants of God, to share the love of God with children knowing that it is God who draws men, women, boys, and girls to himself.
Let us remind each other. “ Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24.

Helping Children Benefit From the Sermon

As a pastor I often get the question, “Do you have any advice for helping my kids to benefit from the sermon?”

This is a question that I really appreciate because it recognizes the importance of the preaching of the Word of God and our reception of it. It recognizes that even the children are to hear and, to best of their ability, understand what is being preached.

What follows are some things that I have done as a Dad and also as a pastor.

Parents Before the Sermon

Read the passage as a family before Sunday morning. This is easy and so very important. They hear the passage read by Dad or Mom and see your commitment to the Word of God. This goes further than you can imagine.

• Ask and answer questions about the passage. As you read it ask questions that help them to see connections and other important features.
• Highlight key themes.
• Make particular notes about the context. A good study Bible is helpful here (my favorite).

Pray for the pastor and those who will gather in the morning. After reading take some time to pray for the pastor and the service. Beg God to showcase the beauty of Christ and strengthen people’s confidence in the Bible.
Ask the kids (especially the little one) to listen for one key point. If they can hear one thing and really get it, then you are winning.
Pray before you leave the car. After driving to church take a brief moment to pray as a family. Pray that you would hear, heed and love God’s Word.

Parents During the Sermon

It is very important to not only train your kids to sit “still and quiet” but also to be attentive to the preaching of the Bible. As parents we don’t simply want well-behaved quiet kids but rather Bible-loving, gospel-saturated, promise-claiming, world-changing kids. This starts with preaching.

• Provide the kids with paper, pencil and a Bible.
• Restate important things during the sermon.
• Point to verses in their Bible.
• Smile—don’t just give them the stink-eye. It’s not a root-canal!
• Be engaged yourself. You undo all of your work if you are nodding off or checking Facebook or the scores of the game.

Parents After the Sermon

• Look at their notes (or doodles).
• Ask follow-up questions.
• Help to make personal application.
• Pray for gospel growth.

Let the Children Come to Me! Kids in Church!!

This hour long seminar explains some of the why we
  have the 1st - 3rd graders in the beginning of the service
  do Kids in Church Sundays a couple of times a quarter 
and 
  encourage parents to have their children sit with them in the service.

If you cannot listen to the whole hour, I want to encourage you to start at the 44 minute mark and listen to the end.

Why should children participate when the church gathers for worship?

1. There is spiritual benefit for children who participate in the worship service.
2. It involves children in the most central, most regular, most valuable and most corporate activity of the church.
3. It provides children with an intergenerational experience and thus the opportunity to be influenced and benefit from the example of others especially their parents.
4. It facilitates the discipleship of our children.

This past Sunday's lesson Israel Rejects God's Plan was from Numbers 13 & 14
As part of the lesson we watched the video that was shown in the auditorium.

The twelve spies knew the promises God had given them.
The twelve spies saw the same things and people in the land.

Ten of the spies focused the giants in the land and how small the Israelites seemed.
Two of the spies focused on God and his promises.

What are you focusing on?
God's work through Christ in you 
or
The circumstances of this world.

The kids watched that same awesome video that was part of the sermon.
