So says John Piper, and as sweeping as the statement may sound, it is absolutely true. Because the eternal communion of our triune God is behind, beneath, beside, and above the universe and is the ultimate reason and cause for our adoption.

Parenting Does Not Create the Child

Parenting has become more complicated than it needs to be. It used to be, as far as I can tell, that Christian parents basically tried to feed their kids, clothe them, teach them about Jesus, and keep them away from explosives. Now our kids have to sleep on their backs (no, wait, their tummies; no, never mind, their backs), while listening to Baby Mozart and surrounded by scenes of Starry, Starry Night. They have to be in piano lessons before they are five and can’t leave the car seat until they’re about five foot six.

A mom writing about young children in church

Dear parents with young children in church,
What you do matters.

You are doing something really, really important. I know it’s not easy. I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring. Really tiring.

I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant carseat and the diaper bag as you find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to try to quiet them.

And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler. I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper.  I hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone’s eyes on you. Not everyone is looking, but I know it feels that way.

I know you’re wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother?

God Calls Israel to love through obedience.

Passage:  Deuteronomy 11:8—17; 28:20

Principle:  God promises to bless or curse.

Prompt:  Ask your child these questions:

• What did Israel have to do to receive God’s blessing? 
• What would happen if Israel disobeyed God?
• How did God promise to bless or curse Israel? 
• How can you be obedient to God? 
• Are there consequences for disobedience today?

Practice: Help your child apply these truths in the following

ways:

• By demonstrating his love for God through obedience to His Word. 
• By remembering God’s blessings and mercies 
• By memorizing God’s Word. 
• By honoring God in all he does.

Memory verses:  2 yr olds—K:     Deut. 6:7

Seven Ways for Busy Moms to Get In the Word!

Fall is here, and for most moms this is the beginning of the busiest season of the year. Back-to-school to-do lists lead right into Thanksgiving and Christmas to-do lists, and we will not find rest again until January 2nd. And while God’s word sits on our shelves waiting for us to get a slow moment, the world bids us to keep busy. Get those kids signed up for soccer, piano, gymnastics, basketball, football, and the list keeps going. You just name it, everybody else is doing it.

The world tells us to get our calendars full and stay on the move. If you don’t, your kids might miss out, or they won’t be cool, or they won’t learn important life lessons, or they won’t be socialized, or they won’t, won’t, won’t. “Get busy and keep busy” is how the unspoken mantra goes.

The world says this chaotic running around is what the good moms do.

But the truth is that we need slow moments.

Principle:  God calls us to meditate on and obey His Word.

Praise:  “I Love You, Lord”

Prompt:

Ask your child these questions:

• How was Israel to love God? 
• What were parents to teach their children? 
• How can we apply God’s Word to our lives? 
• Should anything be more important to us than God?

Practice:  

 Help your child apply these truths in the following ways

• By memorizing Scripture to mediate on throughout the day. 
• By applying the truth of God’s Word to his life today. 
•  By checking his heart to make sure nothing has taken God’s place.

Memory verse:

2 year olds through kindergarten: Deuteronomy 6:5

1^st through 5^th grade:  Deuteronomy 6:6, 7
